On April 1st, youtube played a prank on site visitors by linking every video on its main page to the music video of 80's pop phenom Rick Astley's one-hit wonder "Never Gonna Give You Up." For the record, I have loved this song since the first time I saw it - probably in the late 80's. I remember watching the video on VH1 and thinking, "wow, he sure is dreamy."
Here it is, 20 years later, and the time warp continues...

If you can dodge a wrench . . .
On Wednesday night, the Pacific Young Alumni Club decided to participate in the campus RecSports dodgeball tournament!!! We assembled a full team, made shirts, and gathered to face off against a handfull of student teams. Not exactly sure how the students felt about the whole thing, but we had a super fun time! I am also proud to say that we held our own remarkably well! We won two rounds and lost in the third - which was good for 3rd place. (I think. . . this was my own unofficial ranking - it was never confirmed.) As the various matches and rounds progressed, I remembered the reason I never participated in organized sports. I SUCKED at dodgeball. I couldn't throw the ball to save my life. It was sad and mildly depressing. I guess I'll stick with individual athletic events like running and triathlons.

Team Young Alumni!

Getting ready to dodge!

Justin was a good dodger. I'm hoping our children get his athletic genes.

Finally! Something in my skill set: taking charge!

Shuffling Along...

Ugh. It's Monday morning and the office is too quiet! What to do? Plug into my ipod shuffle! Here are the first (lucky 13) random songs that came up this morning - mind you this is from my "leaving on a jet plane mix" which I created to ease my nerves during a recent trip to Texas, so the selections are of a more mellow variety.
1. Stars - Switchfoot
2. Wink and a Smile - Harry Connick Jr.
3. Ain't No Mountain High Enough - Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell
4. Step Up - Samantha Jade
5. 1234 - Feist
6. Such Great Heights - Iron & Wine
7. In the Waiting Line - Zero 7
8. Teardrops on My Guitar - Taylor Swift
9. 525,600 Minutes - Rent Soundtrack
10. Star Mile - Joshua Radin
11. What Time Is It? - HSM 2 (hangs head in shame)
12. Blessed Be Your Name - Matt Redman
13. Beautiful Broken World - Warren Barfield

Time is Flying!
My lovely desk calendar - a Sommer Perry original - tells me that today is March 10th. That means 1/3 of the month is already gone. Where is the time going????

TGIF!
Friday nights are the best part of the whole week. For a few short hours I try to forget about everything I need to do and set aside the guilt that plagues me the rest of the week about how behind I am on housework, regular work, school work, projects for all my extra curricular stuff, etc. Sometimes I feel like I can never get caught up on anything, let alone everything. But, on Friday nights I just try to let it all go and enjoy a few lazy hours watching a movie or laying around on the couch. It's still hard to put it all aside, but for a short time I can feel a little less guilty about taking some time for myself.
Happy Friday!!!!!!!!!!!

Viva Las Vegas
I got to escape Stockton for a few days and head for fabulous Las Vegas! The point of the trip was to attend an ASAP conference (Alumni Student Association Programs) and host a mixer for our new Las Vegas Pacific Club. Justin was in need of a vacation, so I dragged him along and we got to make a nice vacation out of it!
Wednesday night we mixed it up with fellow Tigers at the Las Vegas Pacific Club mixer. It was great to see some old friends from our college days.

Thursday we dined at Mesa Grill - Bobby Flay's (of Food Network fame) restaurant. Justin was totally geeking out and thought he actually spotted Bobby in the back. Here he is looking for Bobby.

After dinner we headed to the Wynn to see the cirque du soleil show "Le Reve." It was amazing performance of acrobatics, diving, dancing, etc. All done in a pool of water.

Friday evening we took the recommendation of our friend Carolyn and dined at Mon Ami Gabi - a steakhouse in the Paris hotel. We ate outside on the patio and watched the dancing fountains at the Bellagio while we ate.

Later we headed over to The Mirage (which, true to its name, was much farther away than it appeared) to see the spectacular Beatles-themed show LOVE. Amazing! The music, the story, the performance, it was awesome!

On our last evening we took it pretty easy. I had some conference events to attend and then we caught a flick (it just doesn't feel like a vacation to me without a movie involved) and made a stop at New York New York. It was here that Justin crushed the dreams of a little girl by winning me the greatest prize EVER. A stuffed tiger. Here we are representing Pacific (formerly known as UOP) in Vegas.

Sacrifice
So, I thought about giving up myspace for Lent. I mean, I seriously entertained the notion for a few days. For some people, that wouldn't be that huge of a sacrifice. Maybe they don't check it that often or it's just not a big part of their daily routine. I, on the other hand, am seriously addicted to myspace. Not only is it a colossal time waster for me, but it fulfills a weird, deeply rooted desire I have to know things about people. Not in a creepy, stalkery kind of way, but in a genuine desire to understand what is going on in other people's lives. Where it gets a little out of control is that I sometimes end up knowing things that are going on in the lives of people I really don't need to know about. People I haven't seen in years. People who don't even remember or know that I exist. At times, people I have never met in my entire life. Even I have to admit that it's a little on the obsessive side. And the fact of the matter is - my mind is getting very full of mundane details that are of NO importance to me whatsoever.
That being said, I also love myspace because of the connection it gives me to tons of people that I wouldn't normally connect with. I've never been much of a phone person and it takes me years to remember to send a note in the mail. But myspace allows me to stop in on people and leave them an unexpected hello and let them know they are in my thoughts. This is the part of myspace that I wouldn't want to give up for 40+ days.
So, in addition to a yet-to-be-determined sacrifice, I am going to strive to cut the obsessive, bordering-on-weird myspace compulsion out of my daily ritual and only visit "the space" to do some quality commenting.
. . . and maybe in the next 40ish days I'll even learn to use the phone more. :)

Bars and Stars
I went to a dueling piano bar in downtown Austin tonight.
One word: Awesome.
And it's humid. In January. God bless Texas.

Wireless
I decided to break my month+ long blog silence with this little bit of nothing:
I'm sitting in a hotel room looking out at downtown Austin, TX. God bless hotels with wireless Internet.
Oh, and this:
Not to brag, but . . . I got straight A's my first semester of graduate school. Woo hoo! :) I almost had a breakdown and my husband forgot what I looked like, but at least my transcript isn't blemished. A = Over-Achiever.
